WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One day after classes began at UNCW, dozens of students and staff members came together to discuss the events that took place over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Thursday’s event was hosted by the Student Government Association and the Upperman African American Cultural Center. A diverse group of students and staff, including UNCW Chancellor Zito Sartarelli, came together to discuss race relations and how the events in Charlottesville are impacting the campus.
Chancellor Sartarelli released a statement about the events in Charlottesville earlier this week.
Many students voicing their concerns and opinions. Some students even sharing concerns about a lack of diversity on campus.
UNCW Student Body President Ottillie Mensah said that meetings like this encourage students to stand by what they believe, and make a difference in the community.
“I just want students and the youth to know that we do have a major influence, and we are paving the way for those coming after us,” Mensah said. “So, it starts with us. The revolution does start with us. And we can make change happen. Not only at our universities, not only within our homes, within our communities, but within our nation.”
Mensah added that UNCW’s Student Government Association plans to host more events like tonight’s discussion in the future, as well as work with the administration to look at school policies and ensure students feel that they belong at UNCW.
